August: Don't Wait to Feel Motivated

Every January, gyms fill up with people who are convinced that this is finally going to be the year they stick with their health goals. But honestly, I think August is a better time for a reset. Summer is winding down, school starts back, vacations are ending, and schedules begin changing yet again. Even if you don't have kids, life just starts to feel different.
August seems to be one of the few times during the year where we naturally pause and think, "Okay...what do I want this next season to look like?" I think that's a great question—not just for our calendars, but for our health.
The Motivation We Want vs The Discipline We Build
Discipline gets misunderstood. People put discipline and motivation in the same category. They're not.
People who stay healthy long-term aren't the ones who wake up excited to work out every day. They're not always highly motivated. But they are the ones who have built consistent habits that fit their lives.
Motivation will come and go: life will almost always be busy, schedules constantly change, kids get sick, work gets stressful, and our personal lives can get out of whack. At the end of the day, discipline cannot be about having the perfect life or even the perfect schedule because neither of those exist. But the phrases I hear most are, "I just need to get back to my routine" and "I just need to do what I was doing before."
I understand what people mean, but that can't be the goal. Life doesn't move in reverse.
Every season brings new responsibilities, new schedules, and new challenges. Trying to force an old system into a new season usually ends in frustration.
Instead, meet yourself where you are today. What does taking care of your health look like in this season? Workout times and lengths can change. Workout types can change too. Meal prep strategies can be upgraded...or downgraded. The "routine" needs to be able to change. The discipline of choosing health is what has to remain.
Stewardship Doesn't Have Seasons
One thing I love about Scripture is that God doesn't call us to honor Him only when life is convenient. We're called to be faithful in every season. The same is true when it comes to stewarding our health. It's easy to stay consistent when life is predictable; the real test comes when it's not.
When life is constantly changing, discipline can become less about achieving a specific fitness goal and more about faithfully caring for the body God has entrusted to us.
Practical Ways Faith Mirrors Fitness
Systems beat motivation.
Don't rely on feeling motivated. Build habits that make healthy choices easier.
Consistency beats perfection.
One missed workout doesn't ruin your progress.
One healthy meal doesn't make your week.
Keep showing up.
Every season requires adjustment.
Your routine doesn't have to stay the same for your commitment to stay the same.
Faithfulness is often ordinary.
Most growth—in faith and fitness—comes from doing the simple things over and over again.
AUGUST ACTIVITY: Routine Reset
Take 10 minutes this week and make a plan for the month ahead.
You don't need a perfect plan. You just need one you'll actually follow.
(1) What's changing in your schedule this month?
School, work, sports, family commitments, etc.
Write it down.
(2) What's one healthy habit you want to protect?
Exercising 3x a week, eating breakfast, drinking enough water, going to bed early, etc.
Choose ONE habit that matters most.
(3) What's most likely to get in the way of that habit?
Be honest: running out of time, being tired, unexpected schedule changes, etc.
Identify the obstacle before it becomes an excuse.
(4) How can you choose consistency before that obstacle shows up?
If your mornings become busier, could you move your workout to the evening?
If you're expecting to be on the go, could you prepare lunches ahead of time?
If your schedule becomes unpredictable, could you shorten your workouts instead of skipping them altogether?
Don't wait until life gets hectic to decide what you'll do.
Make the decision now. The goal isn't to have a perfect routine. The goal is to faithfully care for the body God has entrusted to you, even when life doesn't go according to plan.
My Prayer For You
Dear LORD,
Thank You for a life that never gets boring. As our schedules change and adapt, help us approach this season with wisdom instead of overwhelm. Teach us to be faithful in the ordinary moments—to honor You through the simple decisions we make each day.
Give us discipline when motivation fades, flexibility when life changes, and grace when we fall short. May we remember that caring for our health isn't about perfection. It's about faithfully stewarding the body You've entrusted to us so we're better equipped to serve You and the people You've placed in our lives.
Let all that we do seek to glorify You and Your kingdom.
Amen.
