July: Confidence That Runs Deeper

3 min read

Summer has a way of making us acutely aware of our bodies.

Pool days...

Vacation photos...

Tank tops and shorts...

For many people, this season creates comparison, insecurity, or frustration. We begin noticing everything we wish looked different. Some people respond by giving up. Others become consumed with chasing a certain appearance.

Neither response leads to lasting confidence.

That's because our confidence isn't found in the mirror—but that doesn't mean our bodies don't matter. God created our bodies intentionally and entrusted them to our care. We don't honor Him by obsessing over our appearance, but we also don't honor Him by neglecting the bodies He's given us.

Loving Your Body Means Caring For It

When it comes to body image, our culture sends mixed messages.

  • On one side, we're told we need to look a certain way to be worthy or confident.

  • On the other, we're told that loving ourselves means never wanting to change.

Neither extreme tells the whole story.

Our value is not determined by our appearance. At the same time, God has entrusted each of us with a body, and we're called to steward it well. Loving the your body doesn't mean becoming consumed with changing it, but it also doesn't mean ignoring your health or convincing yourself that caring for your body doesn't matter. When you truly value something, you take care of it.

For someone recovering from an injury, caring for their body may mean physical therapy and patience, but for someone living a sedentary lifestyle, it may mean beginning to move consistently. If someone has neglected nutrition, it may mean making small, sustainable changes rather than chasing another crash diet.

Stewardship doesn't look the same for everyone because our starting points are different. The goal isn't to look like someone else. The goal is to faithfully care for the body God has entrusted to you, wherever you are today.

Health is a Tool, Not the Goal

Fitness can become an idol...Appearance can become an idol...Even health itself can become an idol if it becomes the center of our lives. Neglect isn't the answer either.

God calls us to put Him first and to love others well. Caring for our health helps us do that more effectively. The stronger and healthier we are, the more capable we are of serving our families, encouraging our friends, participating in our churches, and living out the purpose God has given us.

Health isn't something we pursue so people admire us. It's something we steward so we're better equipped to care for others. When our motivation shifts from impressing others to honoring God, fitness becomes less about vanity and more about faithfulness.

Practical Ways Faith Mirrors Fitness

Identity before appearance...

Your worth was established by Christ long before you reached any fitness goal.

Stewardship over perfection...

God isn't asking for a perfect body. He's asking us to faithfully care for the one we've been given.

Progress looks different for everyone...

Faithfulness doesn't mean everyone's journey looks the same. The next right step depends on where you're starting today.

Gratitude changes perspective...

Instead of focusing only on what your body looks like, thank God for what it allows you to do each day.

JULY ACTIVITY: Heart Check

Take a few minutes this week to honestly reflect on these questions.

You don't need perfect answers. Simply ask God to reveal your heart.

(1) How have you been viewing your body lately?

With gratitude? With criticism? With neglect? With pride?

(2) Is there one area where you've stopped stewarding your health well?

Movement? Nutrition? Sleep? Stress?

What's one small step you can take this week to honor God with your body?

(3) Have you been pursuing health to impress others or to better serve God and those around you?

Ask God to align your motivations with His purpose.

(4) What is one thing your body allowed you to do this week that you're thankful for?

Take a moment to thank Him for that gift. The goal isn't to have the "perfect" body. The goal is to faithfully steward the body God has entrusted to you.

My Prayer For You

Dear LORD,

Thank You for creating each of us with purpose and intention.

Help us to find our confidence in You rather than in our appearance or the opinions of others. Give us wisdom to care for our bodies without making them our identity. Teach us to pursue health as an act of stewardship, not vanity, and to receive Your grace without using it as an excuse for complacency.

May we be faithful with what You've entrusted to us, taking one step at a time toward honoring You in the way we live, move, eat, rest, and serve. Let our health become another way we glorify You and love those You've placed in our lives.

Let all that we do seek to glorify you and your kingdom. Amen.
