April: Run with Perseverance

April feels like a season of renewal. The weather changes and plants start growing again, but progress and renewal within our own lives doesn’t always look so obvious. Sometimes it simply looks like continuing to move forward when things feel hard.

The author of Hebrews asks readers to "run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1

It doesn’t say run the race perfectly; it says run it with perseverance. Anyone who trains regularly understands that. Progress rarely happens in a straight line. Some weeks feel strong and productive. Other weeks feel slow, frustrating, or exhausting. ...Faith can feel the same way.

Strength is Given, Not Just Earned

In fitness, athletes focus on effort: lifting heavier, training harder, pushing a little further. Effort matter, but Scripture reminds us that the deepest strength we have doesn’t come from ourselves.

“It is God who arms me with strength.” Psalm 18:32

“The Lord gives strength to His people.” Psalm 29:11

Those pursuing fitness become used to relying on discipline and hard work. Sometimes we treat life like a workout where the answer is always to push harder, but faith reminds us that real strength comes from trusting God — not our own effort.

Faith & Fitness Require TRUST

Anyone who has followed a training program knows that progress is not always obvious right away.

You show up - - - You work - - - Some days feel great - - - Other days don't

Over time, however, consistency produces strength. Faith works the same way.

There are seasons where spiritual growth feels clear and encouraging. Other seasons feel quiet or uncertain. But the process still matters. Showing up matters. Trusting God when you don’t see immediate results matters. The athlete who trains consistently grows stronger. The same is true in faith.

Practical Ways Faith Mirrors Fitness

There are a few ways the rhythms of training actually mirror faith:

  • Training seasons

    • Growth doesn’t happen overnight. Both faith and fitness require patience.

  • Rest and recovery

    • Rest is not weakness — it’s part of the process.

  • Trusting the process

    • You often don’t see the results immediately, but consistency matters.

  • Showing up when it feels slow

    • Some of the most important progress happens during the seasons that feel ordinary.

APRIL ACTIVITY: Easter Reflection

If you have a few quiet minutes this week, take some time to reflect on the race you’re currently running. You might want to journal these or just think through them during a walk or workout.

  1. Where do you feel weary right now?

Is there an area of life where you feel like you’ve been pushing for a long time?

  1. Where are you being asked to endure?

Where do you feel you need to continue to show up, even when it feel slow, difficult, or uncertain.

  1. Where might God be inviting you to trust Him with your strength — not just your effort?

After reflecting, take a moment to offer each area to Him in prayer. Ask for renewed strength for the season you’re in.

My Prayer For You

Dear LORD,

Thank You for being the source of our strength. When we feel tired, discouraged, or unsure, remind us that we don’t have to carry everything on our own.

Help us run the race You’ve set before us with perseverance. Renew our strength, guide our steps, and teach us to trust You through every season — both the strong ones and the difficult ones.

Let all that we do seek to glorify you and your kingdom. Amen.
