January: Setting Goals that Last

Every January, we talk about goals. New habits - New routines - New versions of ourselves. ...but if we're honest with ourselves, many goals fade by February, not because we didn't want them badly enough, but because we aimed too broadly and planned too vaguely. Goals should be aligned, actionable, and anchored - not just to discipline, but to purpose.
This month, instead of setting dozens of resolutions, I'm inviting you into a simple exercise that creates clarity and momentum for the year ahead. Grab a pen. Don't overthink it. Let's get started!
STEP 1: Write One Goal in Each Category
Write one meaningful goal for each category below. Leave out the details for now.
FAITH - What do you want to grow, strengthen, or lean into spiritually this year? [Example: "I want to be more consistent in praying."]
FRIENDS & FAMILY - What relationship, rhythm, or presence matters most right now? [Example: "I want to be more present with my family."]
FINANCES - What would bring more peace, stewardship, or stability? [Example: "I want to get out of debt."]
STEP 2: Write Three Ways to Achieve Each Goal
This is the most important part. For each of your three goals, write three specific actions - things you can do, not outcomes you hope for.
FAITH (3 Actions)
FRIENDS & FAMILY (3 Actions)
FINANCES (3 Actions)
These should be realistic, repeatable, and within your control.
STEP 3: Cross Out the Original Goals
Yes - actually cross them out. Why? Goals don't change lives, daily actions do. Those nine actions you just wrote? THOSE ARE YOUR REAL GOALS FOR 2026. They're measurable. They're livable. They're things you can return to on hard days when motivation is low but commitment still matters.
Put them somewhere visible. Revisit them monthly. Adjust when needed, but don't abandon them.
My Prayer For You
Dear LORD,
Thank you for every person reading this - for their effort, their honesty, and their desire to grow.
I ask you for clarity where there is confusion, discipline where there is fear, and grace where there is frustration. Help us pursue our goals without losing sight of what matters most: you. Teach us to steward our bodies, our time, our families, and our resources with wisdom.
For those who feel behind - give peace.
For those who feel hopeful - give humility.
For those who feel tired - give strength.
Help this year to be marked not just by progress, but by purpose. Let all that we do seek to glorify you and your kingdom. Amen.

Phenomenal read! I love the part of crossing out your goals, and focusing on the actions. Keep up the great work!
This is pretty powerful stuff. Thank you for sharing this!!!!
